Top 3 sneaker pickups of 2016…

top 3 sneaker pickups of 2016

Adidas have comfortably dominated 2016 with the revolutionary comfort of their Ultra BOOST technology and a non-stop barrage of (let’s be honest, slightly over-hyped) NMD releases.

As a result, it’s no surprise that my number one pickup this year has come from the brand with the 3 stripes and, even less shockingly, it’s a Yeezy! I’ll be honest, I wasn’t sure about the Beluga v2 after seeing pre-release images but it is extremely difficult to do these justice on film.

In person, the beluga colour pops against the tonal greys and the structure / comfort of the shoe is perfect. Easily my top sneaker of 2016.

As they work to stay on the trail of Adidas, Jordan brand have focused on remastered retros, flooding the market with recognisable silhouettes and, towards the end of the year, upping the numbers produced to make them available to almost everyone.

Alongside the increase in production numbers has been a corresponding rise in price with my number two pick coming in at a cool £165. Having said that, the Air Jordan 11 Space Jam’s are a premium quality shoe presented in crazy packaging marking the 20th anniversary of the Tune Squad’s victory!

This is a classic Jordan sneaker updated for 2016 – a mainstay on every top 10 list this year.

Slightly removed from the hype-train is top pickup number three. Vachetta Tan is without doubt the hottest colourway of the year, appearing on absolutely EVERYTHING and showing no sign of slowing down as the year draws to a close.

These Vans SK8-HI’s dropped months ago overseas but only hit the UK market in November – a frustrating trend with Vans over the last half of 2016 (we only just got the Toy Story collection!). The Veggie Tan leather is incredible quality and the old-skool hi-top is updated with a well-utilised heel zipper. Don’t sleep on these – you can grab the Veggie Tan take on all three classic Van styles now!

So, those are my top 3 sneaker pickups of 2016 – what makes your list and what are you looking forward to copping next year? Let me know on Twitter or in the comments section below.

Air Jordan – The Space Jam collection…

air jordan 11 space jam

Can you believe it’s been 20 years since Space Jam was released and I Believe I Can Fly was polluting airwaves as the number 1 single for 3 weeks? I can’t but Jordan brand are here with a reminder and a collection of sneakers / apparel to mark the occasion.

The pièce de résistance is obviously the Air Jordan 11 ‘Space Jam’ sneaker as worn by MJ himself in the movie. Nike have remastered the classic silhouette and it drops mid-December – it is sure to be an instant sell-out.

However, the collection of clothing produced to coincide with the anniversary of the movie is available now and is not one to sleep-on!

Here are my picks from the Air Jordan Space Jam drop…

You know I have to start things off with a hat. I have a more snapbacks in my collection than I care to admit but one more isn’t going to hurt, especially when it looks like this! It even glows in the dark…

This jacket isn’t going to keep you warm enough over the course of an extreme Scottish winter. It will however keep your style at a constant A1 rating with the subtle, glow in the dark Monstars branding.

You can seek to combat the cold weather by layering with this sweater which features the classic Space Jam logo, raglan sleeves, and my go-to, all-black aesthetic.

And no Space Jam inspired look would be complete without the Tune Squad jersey. This all-black take on the iconic top is AMAZING.

This collection is available now from Nike and is selling FAST.

Yeezy Boost 350 v2: Review

Yeezy Boost 350 v2

Like everyone else, I’ve taken A LOT of L’s on Yeezy releases. From early rises at the weekend to get 6 devices loaded up and queuing, to entering so many raffles and Instagram contests that I’ve lost track of what closes and when. I’ve had absolutely zero success, until last weekend that is!

I’ve had Oxford Tan in my cart and Pirate Black 99% through checkout but the websites always crashed before I could pay. I couldn’t bring myself to pay the astronomical resell prices and, with the resell game in the UK so much smaller than that across the Atlantic, it always seemed a massive gamble to secure deadstock authentics.

This time, I got lucky – securing the v2 Beluga direct from Adidas. It took around 45 minutes of sitting in the queue and accepting an 8.5 instead of my usual size 9 but I got them AND I paid retail.

I’ll admit that I wasn’t the biggest fan of the v2’s when I first saw Kanye wearing them around 12 months ago. However photographs really don’t do these sneakers justice because, in person, they are AMAZING.

From the orange speckle throughout the upper, to the exaggerated mid-sole and the all-important BOOST technology (the biggest game changer ever to hit the sneaker game if you ask me!), the v2’s are ETREMELY eye-catching and EXTREMELY comfortable.

They definitely sit a notch below the Adidas UltraBOOST on the comfort-scale but that’s still on another ladder from almost every other sneaker out there just now.

The primeknit feels tougher than on previous releases and the rubber outsoles look less likely to crack (a big problem on the original 350’s); both good signs if you intend on wearing your Yeezy’s. Overall, these look to have significantly more staying power than their predecessors.

By now, you’ll have heard a the recommendation that you size up on the v2’s. I grabbed an 8.5 which is a little smaller than my usual size (but one I often go for in Adidas sneakers – I find them a slightly bigger than Nike etc.) and they fit fine. A little snug around the toe but I like the tightness as it allows me to leave the laces loose for that full Kanye-aesthetic.

The next Yeezy release is the light brown 750 coming on October 15th – I’ll be back in the queue with a few laptops on the go and I’m sure I’ll see you there!

Did you get lucky with the latest Yeezy release? What is your favourite colour way of the upcoming v2’s??
